En un peu plus d\u2019une heure, Tompkins et son multi-talentueux duettiste (l\u2019excellentissime pianiste-chanteur-danseur et, surtout, com\u00e9dien Mathieu Grenier), renforc\u00e9s par les intermittents (et \u00e9galement polyvalents) Rodolphe Martin et Jean-Louis Badet, passent en <em>revue<\/em> des pans entiers de la culture musicale populaire am\u00e9ricaine (donc internationale, donc, qu\u2019on le veuille ou non, europ\u00e9enne et hexagonale). Un territoire qui va du jazz \u00e0 la <em>house<\/em>, du rock au disco, de la rengaine country \u00e0 la ballade de vari\u00e9t\u00e9 la plus sirupeuse. Le tout illustr\u00e9, comme il se doit, par une gestuelle <em>ad hoc<\/em>. Des danses pour \u00e9missions de t\u00e9l\u00e9 restitu\u00e9es avec une pr\u00e9cision diabolique, avec du chic et du style, un sens certain de la d\u00e9rision, \u00e9norm\u00e9ment de la finesse. Sans parler des allusions et all\u00e9gories sexuelles en tous genres, mais jamais vraiment grivoises, la distance critique \u00e9tant toujours la plus juste. Un spectacle <em>bon esprit<\/em>, donc.<\/strong><\/h6><h6>Apr\u00e8s avoir triomph\u00e9 avec son <em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">minstrel show<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\"> intitul\u00e9 <\/span><em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">Black n\u2019Blues<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">, Tompkins aborde, avec l\u2019aide de Grenier, le genre du <\/span><em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">vaudeville<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\"> (au sens am\u00e9ricain du terme) qui juxtapose ou met sur un m\u00eame plan d\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 des sketches de th\u00e9\u00e2tre accessible au plus grand nombre (donc, forc\u00e9ment, un peu m\u00e9lo sur les bords), des num\u00e9ros chant\u00e9s, des <\/span><em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">routines<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\"> de danses diverses, divertissantes (pas n\u00e9cessairement \u00ab\u00a0savantes\u00a0\u00bb), claquettes incluses, un laborieux tour de prestidigitation (\u00e0 la d\u00e9ceptivit\u00e9 assum\u00e9e), une sc\u00e8ne, au final assez <\/span><em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">hot<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">, avec une marotte, on en passe et des meilleurs. Tompkins joue deux r\u00f4les, celui de la vieille gloire de music-hall retir\u00e9e des affaires, m\u00e8re c\u00e9libataire (ou, plus que probable, abandonn\u00e9e) passant son temps \u00e0 repasser des robes du soir aussi frip\u00e9es qu\u2019elle et tentant de motiver un garnement dissip\u00e9 dont elle souhaiterait faire un enfant de la balle, et celui d\u2019une sorte de Bill Medley, le baryton du duo musical <\/span><em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">The Righteous Brothers<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">. On aura d\u2019ailleurs droit \u00e0 la reprise d\u2019un des tubes sensationnels de ce couple artistique, \u00ab\u00a0You&rsquo;ve Lost That Lovin&rsquo; Feeling\u00a0\u00bb (1964), \u00e9crit par Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil et, surtout, par l\u2019inventeur du \u00ab\u00a0mur du son\u00a0\u00bb, Phil Spector, qui produisit la chose en introduisant quantit\u00e9 d\u2019inventions bouleversant les codes des standards et des 45 tours de l\u2019\u00e9poque (arrangements subtils au violon, suppression de l\u2019intro, pont \u00e0 rallonge, dur\u00e9e du morceau d\u00e9passant les 3 minutes autoris\u00e9es, fausse fin, etc.).<\/span><\/h6><h6>Nous avons aussi appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 une nouvelle version de l\u2019inoubliable \u00ab\u00a0Are You Lonesome Tonight?\u00a0\u00bb (1926) de Lou Handman et Roy Turk, dont Elvis fit un <em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">hit<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\"> en 1960, titre qui fut enrichi en 1950 par un passage parl\u00e9 dit par Blue Barron, citant rien moins que\u2026 William Shakespeare (<\/span><em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">Comme il vous plaira<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">, acte II, sc\u00e8ne 7, c. 1559)\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0All the world\u2019s a stage, and all men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts\u00a0\u00bb (\u00ab\u00a0Le monde entier est un th\u00e9\u00e2tre, et les hommes et les femmes ne sont que des acteurs\u00a0; ils font leurs entr\u00e9es et leurs sorties. Celui-ci est sensible aux tunes d\u2019Irving Berlin et conclut sa pi\u00e8ce par un des hymnes au spectacle, le fameux \u00ab\u00a0There&rsquo;s No Business Like Show Business\u00a0\u00bb qui fut\u00a0 \u00e9crit pour le musical <\/span><em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">Annie Get Your Gun<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\"> (1946) et immortalis\u00e9 par Ethel Merman.<\/span><\/h6><h6>Dans ce show, rien n\u2019est complaisant ni r\u00e9trograde. Les danses sont, bien s\u00fbr, particuli\u00e8rement soign\u00e9es, que ce soient les claquettes en \u00ab\u00a0soft shoe\u00a0\u00bb dignes d\u2019un Bill Robinson (cf. la s\u00e9quence du bateau dans <em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">Stormy Weather<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">, 1943) ou d\u2019un Fred Astaire (cf. les pieds caressant la sciure dans <\/span><em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">Top Hat<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">, 1935), les gesticulations pseudo-\u00e9gyptiennes en hommage aux vaudevillistes Wilson, Keppel et Betty, aux pionniers du <\/span><em style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">smurf<\/em><span style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1rem; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\"> qui s\u2019en inspir\u00e8rent (n\u2019allons pas jusqu\u2019\u00e0 invoquer Nijinski\u00a0!) ou aux chorus boys de Beyonc\u00e9 dont on reprend la chanson \u00ab\u00a0Run the World ! Girls\u00a0\u00bb.
